Jim Hawkins

Jim Hawkins is your candidate for re-election to State Representative in the Second Bristol District of Attleboro. He is a graduate of Colby College with an MBA from Providence College. He has been a homeowner in Attleboro for over 35 years. Jim has been an eager and supportive advocate for local businesses and has earned a glowing reputation as a steadfast and effectual champion for public education.
I came to the Statehouse with hope. Hope that I can be a voice for public education, fairness for people who are less fortunate than myself, economic justice for working people, for entrepreneurs and small local businesses, for our honorable men and women who are serving or have served in the armed forces, for sourcing comfort and proper care for our often overlooked and undervalued aging population, for those who dedicate their life's work to public safety, and for our living, breathing planet." - Representative Jim Hawkins
As a district coordinator for the Massachusetts Teachers Association, I have successfully worked with both Democrat and Republican state legislators and will continue to do so on Beacon Hill. I believe that our tax dollars should be spent efficiently, and, as your representative, I will focus on questions about state aid to our schools. I am also concerned about standardized testing, and I will work to have these expensive tests used fairly. The day following my swearing in as your newly elected state representative for Attleboro, it was brought to my attention that the budget excluded funding for a project important to Attleboro schools. I immediately sought assistance to gather research and the language necessary to file an amendment to fund MCIEA., a collaboration school officials and teachers finding ways to evaluate student performance that is better, fairer, less punitive, and less disruptive than what we are currently using.
I know how important thriving small businesses are. I have owned a gas station, managed a number of small businesses, and taught small business management at Roger Williams University. Our small businesses – restaurants, locally owned manufacturing companies, and many other enterprises – are critical to the fabric of Attleboro, and I will be their champion.
The opioid addiction epidemic in New England is a critical issue in all our lives, whether this crisis hits close to home or more indirectly impacts our wallets. I will advocate for legislation that improves services for substance abuse and addiction.
I bring my personal values to this race. In 1999, I was recognized as a National Society of Fund Raising Professionals as partner in philanthropy for my successful fundraising efforts, and for my many years of delivering food to the homeless. I was a founder of the Rome Boulevard Road Race, which sponsored students who could not otherwise afford sports user fees. I taught math at Attleboro High School for 12 years, and I have recruited tutors for homeless students. I have a long track record of actively giving to our community that means so much to me.
And I look forward to representing you and your interests, and to making Attleboro as strong and safe as it can be. -Jim Hawkins.
